VISIT ST. JOHN'S CHURCH

Main Tab Group

Description

St. John's Church is perched on a cliff overlooking the entire east coast of the island, so even if churches are not your thing the view is well worth the visit. It is a beautiful gothic church dating back to 1645, but the current structure was finished in 1836 after it was destroyed by the 1831 hurricane. The church was also severelt damaged by the 1675 and 1780 hurricanes. The churchyard is also extremely interesting and the most famous grave is that of Ferdinando Paleologus, the last descendant of Emperor Constantine, the last Christian Emperor of Constantinople. Inside of the church the pulpit is made of six different types of wood and is particular interest. It is also where the writer of this short write-up was married in 1999, so I am quite partial to this church.
